Gynecomastia in men: recovery from surgical treatment

Gynecomastia in men: recovery from surgical treatment Quite a large number of men suffer from an unpleasant disease – gynecomastia, which is caused by hormonal failures or overweight. The disease is manifested in the form of breast hypertrophy on one or both sides and visually looks like an unnatural breast augmentation. The disease is accompanied by painful sensations in case of the touch, weight in area of a breast and also causes serious psychological problems, which are impossible to get rid of without elimination of their reason.

If you do not treat gynecomastia in time, it can lead to serious complications up to formation of malignant neoplasms. Disorders of hormonal background lead to rapid development of rudimentary male mammary glands according to the female type and milk allocation is possible as well. The disease caused by hormonal disorders can also be accompanied by sagging chin, the appearance of fatty deposits in the abdomen or back. Most commonly the disease occurs during puberty, but it can also occur at any other age.

The fight against gynecomastia includes both therapeutic methods with hormone level adjustment and surgical intervention. The operation proved to be the most reliable method of getting rid of the disease and its unpleasant consequences.

Recovering from an operation

Gynecomastia in men: recovery from surgical treatment Surgical treatment of gynecomastia involves excision of mammary gland and adipose tissue and restoration of natural relief of the male breast. The surgery takes about 1.5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The postoperative period takes about a month, during which the swelling is reduced, normal blood circulation is restored and the seams are healed. In the first days after the operation there is a constant discomfort in the thoracic area as well as hypersensitivity to the touch, but the morbidity is moderate and passes in a few days. During the recovery period, there may be unpleasant complications presented by the following:

  1. Swelling and hematomas, which are the natural phenomenas after surgery. They can be small and limited to the thoracic area or spread even to the abdomen. Restoration of the normal state of tissues takes about 2-3 weeks. In order to speed up the healing, the man should limit the intense physical activities and sun exposure at this time;
  2. Seromas, which derive from the accumulation of serous fluid under the skin. It is a quite typical manifestation during the postoperative period, which passes on its own. If the liquid does not dissipate on its own and there is a feeling of pressure and discomfort, it is being pumped out during a simple procedure. For the treatment of seroma, the doctors recommend wearing the compression underwear until complete restoration of the operated area. The limitation of the loads, which are aimed at normalization of the work of pectoral muscles, early restoration of blood circulation, are indicated as well;
  3. The scars, which are an inevitable phenomenon occurring after the operation that includes excising of tissues during gynecomastia. In case of careful work of the surgeon, positioning of the incision in the lower part of the nipple and normal rehabilitation, the scars become almost invisible.

In case of the timely addressing of a man to the surgeons, it is quite simple to get rid of the physical or psychological discomfort caused by gynecomastia. Operative intervention takes a little time, and in case of compliance with all medical recommendations, full rehabilitation takes a short period, after which a man can feel again the fullness of life without risks to health and complexes related to the shape of the breast.
